Warfarin

warfarin

Warfarin is an anticoagulant used to prevent and treat blood clots. Warfarin is taken orally, but it must be used with caution and regular monitoring with blood tests. It’s important to take this medication exactly as directed by your doctor.

You can expect to go for blood work every week at the beginning of treatment and then every other week to monitor the level of warfarin. Blood tests will initially be arranged by the Thrombosis Clinic and later by your family doctor. The tests can be performed at an outpatient lab that’s convenient for you.

Warfarin can interact with drugs, what you eat or drink, and by herbal and nutritional supplements. If in doubt, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice.

The calendar on the right side of the page can be used to plan and record your Warfarin schedule and blood work dates.

Contact your doctor immediately if you notice any abnormal bleeding anywhere else in your body.
